L is for Laughter. Healing with words. Day 12 #atozchallenge

laughter |ˈlaftər|nounthe action or sound of laughing

"No man who has once heartily and wholly laughed can be altogether irreclaimably bad."- Carlyle, Thomas

Ho Ho Ho Ho Ha Ha Ha Ha Hi Hi Hi Hi Hi

I used to giggle at fingers. I giggled when you looked at me, my feet, or if I had something important to say. She's so happy they would say, always smiling and chuckling.

When I grew wiser I could begin laughing. It would start in my belly, people said you're so funny, your laughter is hearty, worth more than money, it feels like a party.

Laughter is a healer, a language we all understand, like breathing we know how to do it without any instructions. It's an emotional release that involves our whole body, some say it evolved from panting -which is sure sign that your dog is smiling and laughing.  It's uncontrollable, unconscious, social and contagious.

My favourite explanation of laughing was from my 6 year old sister, she said "Laughter is like climbing a ladder, each burst is a step that brings you closer to heaven."  Laughter for me is natures music, sometimes too loud, sometimes to dainty, some laughs fill you privately when people are joking, others burst forth, like farts when you're straining.

If you're feeling a bit down check out the laughing yoga video at the end, 'fake it till you make it' is better than not laughing at all.  If you're really depressed, watch all of them, they might make your smile.

For the child in us:

For Rockers:

For Healers:

Learn to laugh at yourself. A lot of laughter is better than a little, a little is better than none. Remember children laugh more than adults because the make time to play.

Ho Ho Ho Ha Ha Ha hi hi hi hu hu hu u u u u a  a  a aaa  heeeeeeee

Love and laughs

Ida

  6. There is something so carefree about a child's laughter, it's wonderful to hear. I can laugh until I cry sometimes, until it hurts but I feel great afterwards.

  8. In Doctor Who's fifth season (I think with the Ponds) Amy gets left behind on a world for like 40 years and when Rory finds her, she's old. He says something that makes her laugh and she says it's the first time she's laughed in decades.

Yes, laughter is a miracle of the human condition. I love to make people laugh and to laugh in turn.

  10. Ida, what a great post! I considered Laughter as well. You and I seem to be on a similar wavelength this month! I have been trying to remember the name of a book I read a few years ago about laughter. The biggest thing I got out of it was the fact that I can just start laughing for no reason and I will reap big benefits physiologically. Having been a Serious Sue all my life, plus a tendency toward depression, laughter isn't always a natural response for me. One of my sisters has an easy laugh and I love being around her.

  11. I love to laugh! I used to get kicked out of class--in middle school--for not being able to stop laughing. That hasn't happened to me in some time, but I can still get fits of giggles. With all that the world throws at all of us every day, it's amazing that the human spirit finds a way to bounce back and keep laughing--I'm very glad for that. Whenever I have a big laugh now, I think, "I need to do that more often!"

    Great post.

    1. Good to know you haven't been kicked out of class for a long time...*laughs* - I'm still touched by one of the comments about a lady not laughing for decades because she was alone... laughter happens most in good company.

  12. Aha, human, Ida,

I'm forever laughing. You should hear my laughing bark. It's a howling good time :)

My human never takes himself too seriously. His "inner child" continues to teach him the wisdom of laughter. In fact, just for a laugh, he participated in a "Laughter workshop". It was at a fare to help reduce the stigma of mental health issues named, "Sanity Fare". You had one "L" of a fun time with this, my human friend :)

Pawsitive wishes and laughing thoughts, your way,

Penny the Jack Russell dog and modest internet superstar! :)

    1. Penny you are so clever, more humans need to learn from dogs. I really did have an 'L' of a good time, but I am still wondering if I should have used the word gas or passing wind. I think your human is a very benevolent and beneficent man, and I wish I could have been to Sanity Fare, I might start a little laughter workshop in the very small town I live in, my sister is a leader in the disability field in a big city and has helped a lot of people, I'm so proud of her, a laughter workshop would be a great way for everybody to join in.

  14. A six year old said that? A very precocious child!
We say "Laugh and the world laughs with you, snore and you sleep alone."
Or that might be, "Weep and you weep alone."

    1. I thought you wrote precious at first, but you are right with a precocious too, the dictionary definition that it is.. (I always thought it meant naughty) She has grown up to be an incredible woman too... I am sure there are many women weeping beside their snoring husbands ... :D

  16. The laughing song and the yoga laughing both brought huge smiles to my face. I think the benefits of laughter are a reason why people with pets are usually healthier. My dog makes me laugh because of her silliness several times a day.

    1. Thanks for sharing Hilary, it is valuable to laugh, even during the hard times. We are dealing with Alzheimer's disease in my family, one positive is being able to laugh at the same jokes, like it's the first time.
